”TRILOGY” IS A SIGNIFICANT WORD
When I started writing the suspense thriller, traitors story, I never imagined it would develop into a trilogy. Half way through writing the first book and doing a fair amount of research, I discovered I had more material than I could fit in a single book. So, I decided to write a trilogy.
The challenge of maintaining the discipline to write three books, all while balancing a full-time job and family life, for a first-time writer, was daunting. But planning and nailing an entire trilogy was a lot more difficult. The idea was to create more space for research and explore the characters, their world and themes more critically than I would have done in a single novel.
I revised the original plot; created more twists and turns, updated actions and events while staying true to character arcs and backbone of the story. Plotting the course of this huge novel was one of the most formidable tasks yet most rewarding moments of my time as an author.
The challenging artistry in making the storyline flow from one book to the next demanded a well-calculated outline. Ideas would build up in my head and demand a well motivated narrative and action from the characters.
There was the persistent revision and re-writing to make the trilogy as great as I wanted it to be. It demanded total focus to lingering details, unresolved issues that required valid answers in the resolution. I could get stuck on a word and linger on a phrase, but I had to come up with the exact right answer.
THE TRAITORS
What’s the point of writing a thriller, suspense, mystery series about a race to save humanity without having traitors from within and outside; in the family, in business, and even within romantic relationships?
Over the course of writing the trilogy, I fictionally created lots of conflicts between the characters, inspired by real life world events which impact and destroy human lives. And I can tell you honestly: nothing is more frightening than a threat from higher places, from powerful people we trust and believe are there to protect us. When these powers betray us and instead turn on us, there is nowhere to hide. When this happens, we grow in our awareness; we raise our consciousness to a high level. We seek like-minded people and figure out how to fend for ourselves. In case there is no courageous saviour like Martina to save us, we band together as a people and fight for our birthright, freedom.
THE RESOLUTION HAD TO BE CORRECT
To create all the acts from book one to book two and have the story fall flat in the end was a possibility I wasn’t prepared to accept. The pharmaceutical war needed to feel full, realistic, and complete. I tied up the loose ends. I worked on those last chapters longer than any chapter in the books. The ending of the Traitors Trilogy had to be accurate.
In the last instalment, Traitors Beyond Insanity, all battles had been fought and conspiracies settled. It left me with the characters, the actors that shared in my writing journey, individuals I had created and grew to cherish. In the end, it is difficult to let the characters go. I still think about my characters to this day, wondering what they are doing and if I can pick up the pen and continue with the series. To my delight, many fans have expressed the desire that I continue with the series. I’m still thinking about it.
As every writer knows, some days are tougher than others. Sometimes, one needs an extra bit of seasoning to keep the words from blinding your vision on the computer screen in front of you. For me, a cup of tea has been that special spicing.
It’s true of every story ever written, there’re lessons to be learned by every writer. I have learned many things and those lessons have stayed with me.
In love and light!
